Internet Memes

And the Internet has screwed us (intellectually) again.

I have to tell you, I am not really a fan of Internet memes… in fact, I didn’t even really know what they were until recently.

Well, a few days ago I saw a cute one about writers, then a similar one about stay at home moms. Then all of a sudden everyone was posting them about their stupid goddamned profession – nurses, doctors, postal workers, you name it. It was that six box “what society thinks you do…” “what your mom thinks you do…” meme that quickly became an Internet sensation.

I can’t take it anymore, though, so I’ve created my own meme in response. I recognize the irony (or, more accurately put, the hypocrisy), but I’ve seen so many of these things in the last few days I am beyond the point of caring.

The purpose of a meme is to briefly and cleverly comment on something in a humorous way. Which many times leads to laughter and a smile. What’s wrong with that?.

I don’t see anything wrong with being brief and clever and inspiring laughter, but there is nothing clever about the same thing over and over again with just a change or two. But that’s just me.

Well I can agree with that. All my memes are original and are not inspired by other memes but are instead fueled by alcohol.

Here I am wondering why this wasn’t familiar… I was in an interwebs free zone at that time. Very peaceful it was too…
I really don’t see the point of these … or ecards. Totally pointless.

      TOTALLY!

Hahah! This is great! Thanks! I was laying in bed last night/ (this morning?) thinking about how much society has changed because of smart phones and how annoying it is. Not all trends are good. Another interwebsz pet peeve for me that is similar to what you mentioned are those stock “inspirational” pics/memes that are regurgitated in lieu of actual thought.

I totally agree … NOT ALL TRENDS ARE GOOD! Couldn’t have said it any better!

I’m so over those things. It’s the worst when you belong to a certain subset of people (programmers, Italians, etc blah blah) and 17 people who also belong in the same subset as you post the same meme to your facebook page…

I agree … I have a lot of friends that are nurses and teachers and it’s really just gotten old at this point.

I guess there’s just a LOT of easily amused idiots out there…

      TOTALLY agree!!

I know! I just don’t get this. The same thing happened to me, and I had the same reaction. It’s like the “shit people say” videos. Where is the creativity? Even if they are funny, you want to hate them for lack of originality. Are we all becoming clones?

    1. Heather Christena Schmidt

I think we are all becoming clones. I feel like every “futuristic” book and movie where everyone is a drone, doing the same exact thing, is coming true.

UGH…I have seen that site before!

  8. Frugalistablog

Huh? I’m still confused what a meme is. And have I been doing it? Nothing of mine has gone viral so I’ll answer no. Is that when I like funny cat pictures with captions? I feel so behind.

    1. Heather Christena Schmidt

I don’t believe it is something that has gone “viral” per say; I think it’s something that everyone repeats – like an ‘ism. Yes, those cat photos are definitely ‘isms and, therefore, memes. So are those Skyrim “took an arrow to the knee” sayings.

ANYWAY, if you haven’t seen people posting these six box memes the last few days YOU ARE LUCKY. I posted two the first day they started to get out there and regret it hahah.
